Bricks by J. Patrick Zbella
This work depicts an unnamed fictional character that narrates the moments before his death. It is unclear exactly where he is and who he is with, but he is somewhere else telling the listener his story. The story shows him walking downtown contemplating death and suicide, until his unforseen death. And as he is dying he comes to several realizations about his life.
I intentionally made it unclear where he was; whether he is in hell or heaven or some other after life, I left that bit up to the interpretation of the listener. I did this because the story focuses on life and living and not what comes after. Though, my interpretation is that he is in some sort of heaven or purgatory but is still bitter about his circumstances because he is incapable of fulling understanding them.
I wrote the piece, recorded and directed the voice actors, as well as created all the music for the piece. The music is just me and my guitar and some effect pedals.

A very well done piece, with a nice use of place and dialogue to create a sense of hopeless. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYou're an excellent writer! This was such a compelling story, with great music that wasn't ever distracting. One specific moment near the end with complete silence was my favorite and was also super effective/reflective.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
Well done Patrick! Your piece was dark, intriguing, and very smart. I loved that your directions were clear but they didn't break us away from the story being told to us. Standing on the bridge was so deeply personal and tragic that I actually had to step away from the railing. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteI love everything you do and this piece just makes me love your stuff even more. You really set the tone of it being depressing and dark. The narration and the story telling was brilliant. You are a great writer! I really connected with the character in your piece. When I was little I actually almost drowned in the very river. Listening to your audio made me think back to that very moment I almost drowned and realizing how much I really appreciate being alive after my experience. A lot of people don't really realize how good it is to be alive and I think your audio really as the potential to open peoples eyes. I feel like you should really do more of this story telling stuff.
ReplyDeleteYour piece was surprisingly depressing and nostalgic over scary or creepy, which I had kinda of thought was going to be the route of your piece from your idea proposal. It was well written and meant to drive the listener to think more heavily about suicide and death, and to appreciate the life they have. From a personal perspective, I have grown up with a lot of suicidal people around me (including myself at one point), and a number of deaths. I felt like a great lesson of this is that wishing for death is a waste of the precious time you do have, because that time is not set to any certain amount. You could get a day on earth or 100 yrs but you won't know when or where it'll end.
ReplyDeleteThe story you told blew me away, so good Patrick! As I walked you pointed out details I wouldn't necessarily have noticed and painted them in many different lights, rather it be sad and awaiting death or thankful of the beauty and life. Really strong piece, good job, of course!
ReplyDeleteYour piece was definitely one of the betters ones when it came to telling the narrator's story and grasping his emotions. The sound of his voice was crisp, the music beautiful, and the route we took allowed us to gain a better understanding of how he viewed his environment. The ending was the clincher though, and I liked how the music stopped the moment he asked himself how come he never realized the world could be so beautiful right before his death. Really powerful, definitely a well done audio tour.
ReplyDeleteThis was a really excellent piece. You created a meaningful story with fantastic music. This piece aroused people think about the death and realize the meaningless for our life. You are a good director and editor.
ReplyDeleteThe relationship between narration and ambient music that you had created placed me in absolute awe. Though the work was dark in content, this relationship brought up the morale of the work and created something rather beautiful. I do appreciate how at the beginning, you provided a haunting introduction; this truly set the tone in regards to someone on the other side attempting to communicate with the mortal world and explain the events that led to their demise.
ReplyDeleteAs a side-note, I’m absolutely paranoid of this area now and was freaked out as I passed through some of the same streets the proceeding evening. D:<
As usual - fantastically produced and executed. I especially enjoyed the development of your character. The hindsight story was very immersive. The use of your surroundings in the audio was well done and timed just right. Well done.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap man, I know I sung my praises already but you knocked it out of the park with this. Audio quality, editing and music were all top notch. The narritive was so eerie yet comforting. This piece rides that line between depressing and uplifing. It still sticks with me and I don't think I'll be able to walk that particular path without being reminded of it. Envokes some very strong emotions and tackles a heavy subject with grace and style. Nicely done dude!
ReplyDelete^^ Kailee totally stole my "Holy crap man," but, she's totally right. Amazing work as always. You really did an excellent job of writing a story that was not only conceivable but had the ability to take root in your audiences hearts and twist emotion to a believable and terrifying place.
ReplyDeleteI knew before even participating that yours would be amazing. The quality editing and music were spot on.
